Interview with Stefan Hoffmann-Kuhnt, Siemens Ltd., China, Beijing, February 2010

Siemens is one of the world's largest electrical and electronics companies, and one of the most well-known, liked and respected corporate citizen enterprise in China. By applying a wide array of environmental portfolio and innovative solutions in the cooperation with the local partners, Siemens is committed to contributing to the sustainable development of China.

One of the key aspects of the SWITCH-Asia Project is corporate responsibility. What does corporate responsibility mean to Siemens?
Responsible corporate leadership is a prerequisite for being accepted by society and achieving lasting success. We are a global player whose activities have a broad impact on customers, employees, shareholders, the environment and society as a whole. For us corporate responsibility means that we ensure the success and the future of our company by taking into account economic, social, ethical and environmental aspects, and that we establish clear and transparent standards for our company.

How does your company ensure that corporate responsibility requirements are met by suppliers?
In implementing corporate responsibility in Siemens, it is also necessary to obligate suppliers to comply with our principles. Compliance has the highest priority at Siemens as part of our corporate responsibility. Therefore, the Code of Conduct for Siemens Suppliers is a mandatory element of all new and extended contracts and we expect our suppliers to commit towards our standards and principles in their own company as well as to promote and implement it within their supply chain. Once a business relationship is established, we assess and review suppliers’ performance and their compliance with our code of conduct at regular intervals.

Why do you support the SWITCH-Asia Project?
The SWITCH-Asia Project is in line with the corporate responsibility strategy of Siemens and further extends our efforts concerning the sustainable development of our supply chain in China. Through this project we will be able to get to know potential Chinese suppliers of the electrical and electronics sector that are committed in qualifying themselves in working together with European companies. The project actions have great potential in contributing to the continuous improvement of the quality of our supply chain.
